Just Say Yes to Yourself

Just Say Yes to Yourself

What do you need to start saying yes to? Historically, nurses are givers, we give and give and give some more, often at the expense of ourselves. Many of us tend to give until we are thoroughly depleted and totally exhausted. Then sprinkle in the demands and stress that the pandemic has brought into our lives.

Besides our nursing careers, many of us are raising families…. some are attending on-going training/schooling, or working more than one job just to make ends meet, and the majority of us running in the gerbil wheel of day to day responsibilities suffer from what I call adult…itis. Sound familiar?

One of the most common complaints I hear from colleagues and the people I coach is there is no “me” time. You too? Now let’s explore, is it really true or are you just keeping too busy with everything else? Take a moment to deeply ponder your truth here. My guess is that some of you have a difficult time honoring yourself. Maybe there is even a selfish belief pattern operating behind the scenes too…like self-care is selfish. It is important to get to the root of what stands in the way of saying yes to yourself. Awareness is the first step to movement and change.

A fundamental truth is this: we have to put ourselves on the top of our own list….we have to make choices that honor ourselves! The reality is NO ONE is going to do that for you…but YOU!

So, what do you need to start saying yes to?

• Exercise
• Healthier eating
• Meditation
• Hobbies
• Time off/down time • Travel
• Hobbies
• Adventures/spontaneity
• Playing
• Hiking
• Taking a long hot bubble bath
• Reading
• Taking a nap
• Whatever it is that refuels your soul…that is what you need to say yes to more often.

Several humans I know overcommit to activities adding more and more into their lives. This results in feeling even more overwhelmed. To those who suffer in this way it is imperative that you learn to say NO to other activities so that you can say YES to yourself.

Learning to say yes, may be a big focus shift personally. If so, take a few minutes to focus on the word allow. What do you need to ALLOW back into your life? Make a list and then give yourself permission to take action toward at least one thing you need to say yes to.

What are you waiting for? When you say yes to yourself you are choosing to refuel, rest and restore. Just say yes to yourself and start today!
