Program Description:

Evaluation and Management (E/M), is the CPT the language of healthcare, but if not interpreted and reported correctly, we won’t be able to communicate our services provided or our patient’s conditions appropriately.

Medical necessity denials have surged dramatically, fueled by stricter payer policies, automated denial reviews, and post-payment audits. And while the majority of denials can be overturned, the time, cost, and clinical resources required to pursue appeals are driving up operating costs and draining already stretched teams.

The right diagnosis code (s) and appropriate E/M rely on ability to differentiate and properly acknowledge documentation and clinical findings.  Even though the 2021/23 E/M updates have changed to less administrative work for providers, the 95/97 old habits are hard to get over.   Let’s start making better decisions and coding habits to navigate successfully to your destination

Program Objectives:

  • Understand differences between Complexity of Problems Addressed (COPA)
  • Get a better understanding of how to associate DATA based on documented phrases
  • Awareness of documentation RISKs including Minor versus Major Procedures
  • Your role is data integrity
  • Provide a smarter road map to your coding destination

Agenda:

8:30-9:30am

Re-review of 2021/23 Guidelines by the AMA/CPT

Coders often find these concepts challenging to distinguish. Differences between insight on surgical procedures and risk for major vs minor; trying to find ways to better understand and explain – and when there’s enough to say that the risk factors are identified will be reviewed for Levels 4 and 5. By understanding the differences, Coders will get a better understanding when to defend the level assigned and use is appropriate.

9:30-11:00am

Coding Scenario Examples will be worked on collaboratively

If documentation is not clear and you don’t effectively communicate, the E/M and reporting system is not functional.  We’ll discuss flaws in documentation and its’ effects on proper reporting applications.

11:00-11:30am

Denials Management review–

If documentation is not clear and you don’t effectively communicate, the E/M and reporting system is not functional.  We’ll discuss flaws in documentation and its’ effects on proper reporting applications.
