Instructors:
Cella Janisch-Hartline, BSN, RN, PCC Professional Certified Coach, is the Nursing & Leadership Development Educator at Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative. Cella brings her experience from over 40 years in various rural healthcare leadership positions to her work as she combines her passion for nursing, leadership, coaching and teaching. Named the 2018 Outstanding Educator through the National Rural Health Association, she engages healthcare participants across the country with her humorous, action-oriented and compassionate approach. Cella writes a monthly blog about Refueling Your Heart.

Sarah Ewers, BSN, RN, is the Nursing Clinical Development Educator at Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative. Sarah earned her Bachelor in Science of Nursing through Viterbo University, and continues to have a passion to hold herself accountable for multiple hours of continuing education. She brings a wealth of experience in providing quality care to patients in multiple settings including Intensive Care, Medical-Surgical, Rehabilitation, Assisted Living, and Long-Term Care. She brings a fresh approach that participants can relate to and bring back to their work practice to implement and grow in their career. She is excited to share her real-world experience to inspire and influence healthcare providers.

Target Audience:
New obstetric/post-partum/newborn nurses, obstetric nurses who want to refresh/update their knowledge, nurses who are considering working in a rural healthcare obstetrics unit
Program Description:
Are you a new nurse to obstetrics (OB)? Is OB nursing something you are considering in your future? Have you been working in OB for a while but just don't feel comfortable yet? Are you an OB nurse who hasn't dealt with an OB emergency in a while? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then this OB Boot Camp is designed just for you.
Our OB Boot Camp takes place over a five-week period, where we will explore all aspects of working in a rural healthcare obstetrics unit.
Throughout this interactive boot camp, participants will engage in simulated (hands-on) learning opportunities, including case study discussions, role playing effective communication/conflict management techniques, OB/newborn assessments/emergencies and reviewing of priority interventions for various OB situations. This comprehensive course is designed to provide the obstetrics nurse with a solid foundation from the core principles and standards of care and practice perspective, in hopes of helping get the new nurse ready to practice solo quicker in the unit.
During the first four weeks there will be a Zoom session for 4 hours each week. In addition, participants will be assigned videos as required “homework” at the end of each Zoom session; these videos will need to be watched prior to the next Zoom session. On average, plan on approximately two hours each week to watch the videos. On week five, there is a two-day, in-person, hands-on session scheduled at the RWHC Office & Training Center in Sauk City.

- Practice crucial conversations, SBAR communication and hand-off of patient care
- Discuss at least five patient safety concerns as an OB nurse
- Learn an effective way to deal with conflict on the team
- Review the pathophysiology of the pregnant patient
- Dialogue concerns about BMI (body mass index) patients
- Articulate labor stages and delivery processes
- Review obstetrical emergencies and priority interventions of pre-eclampsia, HELLP syndrome and eclampsia
- Review the criteria for diagnosis and priority interventions for pre-term labor

- Collect effective tips and techniques to support the laboring patient
- Determine the risks and care for the mother who is a VBAC
- Examine labor inductions and augmentation of labor
- Differentiate shock states to include hypovolemic, distributive, cardiogenic and obstructive
- Articulate the symptoms and interventions for amniotic fluid emboli vs. pulmonary emboli
- Review pathophysiology of disseminated intravascular coagulation
- Discuss the benefits of having midwives and duola’s at the bedside

- Enhance awareness on upholding regulatory standards
- Differentiate epidurals vs. intrathecals while providing appropriate nursing care
- Outline criteria of a thorough head to toe newborn assessment
- Recognize the most common mental health challenges that may be experienced by the mother or family to include but limited to post-partum depression, trauma informed care, and processing the birth experience
- Review the symptoms and priority interventions of hypoglycemia and group B strept/sepsis

- Discuss documentation standards and guidelines to reduce legal risk
- Identify the criteria of a 7- point post-partum assessment
- Articulate the symptoms and priority interventions for the infant experiencing hypothermia and newborn seizures
- Discuss signs/symptoms of newborn experiencing gastroschisis, omphalocele, diaphragmatic hernia, choanal atresia and neural tube defects
- Identify common crisis management steps and interventions

DAY 1 - Aug. 27
- Differentiate care for the planned vs. emergent C-section
- Review common medications utilized in obstetrics
- Determine appropriate nursing interventions related to various medications administered
- Recognize the anatomy and physiology characteristics to each identified emergency discussed
- Review post-partum hemorrhage with priority interventions
- Review of priority interventions and hands-on skill development for emergency delivery, shoulder dystocia, prolapsed cord and cardiac arrest in Mom
- Defuse the team post experience
- Integrate key learnings through case studies/simulations
DAY 2 - Aug. 28
- Establish the risk and benefits to Mom and Baby
- Integrate key learnings through case studies/simulations
- Review fetal circulation and the transition that happens at the time of birth
- Differentiates early, late and variable decels while identifying appropriate care when seen on strip
- Review apgar scoring
- Discuss the prevalence of addiction/drug withdrawal for Mom and baby which includes interventions
- List at least 3 tips and techniques for successful breastfeeding
- Discuss ethical challenges that might arise as an OB Nurse
- Review the stages of grief with appropriate responses
- Examine the common causes/risk factors that lead to intrauterine fetal death
- Discuss tips and techniques to support and communicate effectively with the grieving family
- Strategize options to healing the healers heart
