Cella brings her experience from over 40 years in various rural healthcare leadership positions to her work as she combines her passion for nursing, leadership, coaching and teaching. Named the 2018 Outstanding Educator through the National Rural Health Association, she engages healthcare participants across the country with her humorous, action-oriented and compassionate approach. Target Audience:
Nurses/healthcare providers that care for the pediatric population across the continuum of care
Program Description:
It is imperative to recognize that pediatric patients are not little adults. This course is designed to review the anatomy and physiology considerations that differentiate the assessment of the pediatric patient from that of an adult. Within the assessment findings, children will demonstrate subtle clues that their condition is beginning to deteriorate requiring the healthcare provider to rapidly intervene before they decompensate. Throughout the day several pediatric emergencies will be reviewed along with describing priority interventions needed/required. Knowledge learned will be applied and integrated into several case studies.
Program Objectives – Participants will learn to:
- Recognize the anatomy and physiology that differentiates the assessment of the pediatric patient from that of the adult patient
- Identify subtle assessment findings that indicates that the child’s condition is beginning to deteriorate and that a rapid response is required
- Review pediatric emergency situations to include, but not limited to: respiratory distress vs. failure, abdominal pain, dehydration, shock, seizures, poisonings, diabetic ketoacidosis, psychiatric and trauma
- Prioritize nursing interventions to be implemented in various emergencies
- Engage in critical thinking/incorporating the knowledge learned through case studies
