Sarah Ewers, BSN, RN, is the Nursing Clinical Development Educator for Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative. Sarah earned her Bachelor in Science of Nursing through Viterbo University and continues to hold herself accountable for multiple hours of continuing education. She brings a wealth of experience in providing quality care to patients in multiple settings including Intensive Care, Medical-Surgical, Rehabilitation, Assisted Living, and Long-Term Care. She has a fresh approach that participants can relate to and bring back to their work practice to implement and grow in their career.

Target Audience:
Nurses and other health care providers (i.e. cardiac rehab personnel, monitor technicians) that interpret heart monitor rhythms as part of their work responsibilities.
Program Description:
This course on basic arrhythmia will include an overview of the heart’s electrical conduction system, review of commonly seen arrhythmias and treatment considerations for abnormal findings and priorities interventions for lethal arrhythmias. Some self-directed activity will also occur as several strips will be presented for individual interpretations throughout the day, so that the learner can proceed at their own pace with the ability to ask questions and receive guided interpretation from the presenter.
Program Objectives – Participants will be able to:
- Review the heart’s electrical conduction system
- Determine potential causes of arrhythmias
- Recollect the clinical signs and symptoms present when patient experiences decreased or altered cardiac output/perfusion
- Engage in a systematic process for EKG Strip interpretation
- Differentiate the criteria evident on the strips to determine the various types of heart blocks
- Compare and contrast atrial vs. ventricular arrhythmias
- Identify appropriate emergency interventions for lethal arrhythmias
- Interpret practice strips utilizing the systematic approach
- Identify life-threatening arrhythmias
