The Southern Wisconsin Immunization Consortium (SWIC) serves Grant, Green, Iowa, Lafayette, Richland, Sauk and Columbia counties in southern Wisconsin in their mission to improve rates of childhood immunizations.
SWIC is a multi-sector partnership between schools, public health, and health plans (Dean Health Plan and Unity) in the area. We depend on the participation of community partners and we would love to work with your organization if you are interested in vaccination resources or information - even if you are on the fence. In 2010, the Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative in conjunction with Dean Health Plan and Unity Health Insurance identified particularly low childhood immunization rate for Dean and Unity enrollees in southern Wisconsin. Health plan data showed that for 2010 the immunization rate for children age two in combined SWIC areas was only 66%. SWIC areas are designated "rural" by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Dane County, SWIC's nearest urban neighbor, had immunization rates at 77%. When compared to national data in the Health Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS), the rates were far below the expected 85% to 89% required to score within the 85% and 90% benchmarks respectively. The HEDIS rates have risen each year, leaving rural Wisconsin further behind national expectations.
SWIC has received generous donations from Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative, Wisconsin Office of Rural Health, SSM Health Dean Medical Group, and Quartz Insurance.
