Target Audience:

Emergency Department Registered Nurses (new or experienced)

Program Description:

Whether you are a new grad or an experienced Emergency Department nurse, caring for the pregnant patient can be terrifying. Consider the following questions. Are you an Emergency Department nurse who has little or no experience to the Obstetrics Department (OB)? Does the thought of an emergent delivery of a baby in the ED frighten you? Are you working for an organization that does not have an Obstetrical Department? Are you an ED nurse who wants to learn more about emergent OB conditions that you might present to your ED? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this workshop is designed with you in mind!

During this ONE day workshop we will explore emergency care for the pregnant patient. Throughout this interactive day, the participants will be engaged in simulated learning opportunities, including case study discussions, OB and newborn assessments/emergencies and reviewing priority interventions for various OB situations. This comprehensive workshop is designed to provide the ED nurse with a solid foundation of core principles and standards of care and practice. This workshop will ready the nurse to care for a variety of conditions that could present the Emergency Department including trauma, emergent delivery of a newborn, placental abruption, uterine rupture, pre-eclampsia/HELLP Syndrome, post-partum hemorrhage, just to name a few. We will also discuss EMTALA and how it will affect transfer of the OB patient.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of a pregnant woman and her fetus
  • Identify risk factors that are identified to complicate care of a pregnant woman
  • Review obstetrical emergencies that put the life of the woman and fetus at risk
  • Emergency delivery of a newborn in the Emergency Department
  • Engaging in critical thinking and integrate knowledge through case studies
  • Understand EMTALA and how it affects transferring the pregnant woman
