Target Audience:

New healthcare supervisors and managers (< 1 year of experience)

Program Description:

You’re stepping into the shoes as a supervisor for the first time. That is often both exciting and intimidating! Making that role transition requires managing changing relationships and development of new skills. How do you effectively lead those who used to be your coworkers while also navigating the challenges that come with the new role?

This one-day, highly interactive workshop offers five key steps for moving into supervision successfully. Participants will utilize self-reflection and assessment, group activities, discussions, role play scenarios, and action planning to grow confidence towards formal leadership.

Participants will learn to:

  1. Develop strategies for transitioning into the role of supervisor
  2. Increase awareness and skills needed to establish clear expectations and boundaries
  3. Step up skills in effective two-way communication
  4. Identify factors that must be considered when making supervisory decisions
  5. Discern when different methods of decision making are called for

Consider taking this workshop if the following are mostly true for you:

  • You now supervise individuals who were previously your coworkers.
  • You would like to develop confidence in addressing performance concerns with a former colleague.
  • You worry there may be perceptions of ‘favoritism’ with those you were friends with before you were promoted.
  • You are younger and less experienced than those you now supervise
  • You have to now enforce rules you didn’t consistently follow before becoming a supervisor.
  • Former coworkers ask you to share information that you aren’t allowed to share.
  • You have a different set of expectations for the team than the previous supervisor but you’re not sure how to communicate them.
  • You struggle with communicating with the team—sharing messages in the right way and/or having employees feel that their input is heard.
  • You’re asked to make decisions but don’t know where to start
